I have since found that this will not work in NZ and that there are limitations in the sort of files that it will read. You cannot swap books with friends or share so Amazon have got all the commercial aspects tied up.
Still a good idea!
I also saw something (I think it was in Bill Kerrs Blog) about a similiar thing that can be manufactured for about US$20 that is being used inn Third World countries (no, not NZ)

I've been wanting a reader for a while, so was interested to have a look at this link.
I'd want to check before buying which types of documents were accepted by Kindle. .PDF is not mentioned, and this is a pretty standard file format.
If you buy it I'd be interested to check it out.
